A California Wine in need of NJ College Food

Guenoc Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 – $10

I found this bottle sitting in my cellar as I was just perusing trying to figure out what I would have to drink tonight.  I really wasn’t in the mood to open one of my good bottles, and noticed this bottle just calling me.   I answered, popped the cork and gave it a chance…

For an inexpensive wine, it has a bit of character.  Some developing gamey notes, ripe cherry fruit, and medium tannins.  The finish is a bit harsh and not too complex, and seems to be a bit higher in acid than I would like from a medium body California Cabernet.

For what it is, I’d say it’s a decent wine… but I do believe I’ve had better in this range… so this gets the  NOT…ABLE Stamp of disapproval from me.  Having said that, it would probably work well with a meal, and may just go perfect with a Fat Koko from the Grease Trucks in New Brunswick (  A little marinara sauce, a little grilled meat, and some mozz sticks and fries!)… Maybe I’ve been too spoiled with my last few wine tastings, but I think I’m pretty fair when it comes to evaluating value wines… I just don’t see much value in this one.  Anyway, I did enjoy writing about it, but just make sure if you are going to try it, you take a trip to see Mr. C first!
