In the Duoro Valley, understanding the grape varie

In the Duoro Valley, understanding the grape varietals isn’t the most important way to appreciate the wines.
There is so much history and ‘soul’ that goes into cultivating these wine grapes.
At Wine & Soul, we tasted only blends, whites, reds, port, made using very traditional as well as modern winemaking techniques.
These wines are excellent for food pairings, and have great character and depth, while still being approachable young and some even have reasonable aging potential.
When you hear the term “Red Blend” or “White Blend “ you may think of wines like Meiomi or Caymus Conundrum, or something with Zinfandel or Syrah…or even a southern Rhone style wine.
Just because a wine is a blend of several different grapes, like most wines of Portugal, doesn’t mean it has to be orver produced, overly fruity, or poor quality 😉
Don’t pigeon hole your wine preferences by what you know or think you know. There is a world of wine you have yet to explore that can change your life forever! 🎶🍷

One of the standouts from my all too brief but amazing time in the Duoro Valley! This was a fantastic wine and food experience overall, but I was very impressed with the quality for value on this 2020 dry red wine. Balanced fruit, structure, acid and tannin it was a perfect table wine for sipping that also paired well with duck and veal dishes!
Portugal has been making amazing dry wines for well over 2 decades, and we will see some great things to come! For those who know, good for you. For the rest who don’t… get on board now! 🎶🍷😊

Loved tasting these well made Santa Lucia Highlands wines today with @justjonilynn @tastemcintyre !
Great high acid and balanced Pinot Noir & Chardonnay that drinks well now, but also gets more complex with some age. The 2016 SLH Pinot had some fun herbal and truffle notes with the mellowed cherry fruit and balanced acid, while the 2016 Estate PN still showed significant room for development with darker berry notes, vanilla and a strong backbone of acid. The 2018 SLH Pinot was much more vibrant than the half bottle of 2016, offering a fresher, higher acid style of an equally lovely expression of Pinot Noir!
