Great things happen in 3s. These are 3 great California blends, all unique in their own way. What I love about all of these is that while they will appeal to most Napa Valley wine lovers, none of them are from Napa. One of them doesn’t even contain any Cabernet Sauvignon. Syrah - Ballard Canyon. Stolpman Rubens Block Syra

Syrah - Ballard Canyon. Stolpman Rubens Block Syrah 2017 Big voluptuous bold dark fruit with powerful gripping tannins! There is a slight disconnect between the fruit, acid, and structure for me, but that does come together more as the wine opens up. I think this one is going to sing beautifully with just another 2-3 years of bottle age. I have a feeling this will appeal to a majority of red wine drinkers, especially in the US and in TX. This is a bit bigger than the style of wine I typically enjoy. Perfect harmony with all components is my goal, but it’s not easy. It may not be my personal favorite style…but it does show a very uniquely Californian style of Syrah. Quite different from juicy Australian Shiraz, and drastically different than Northern Rhone wines. This one is most akin to a southern Rhone style wine, but being 100% Syrah and as big and bold as it is, it truly defines a sense of place in its Ballard Canyon home! Chablis - A classic region producing mineral driven, authentic and clean styles of Chardonnay… a refreshing change from the tropical and oaky styles of California! Old Vines Santenay- Bourgogne is known for great Pinot Noir… if you haven’t tried this, it’s an amazing value play for the region! Then there’s Bordeaux. I want to dive deeper into Italian wines… I just think people are missing out on the incredible quality and value… am I wrong? I know Cabernet and Red blends seem to be all the appeal for the majority of American (and Texan) wine drinkers… but if you aren’t drinking Italian wines when you eat Italian food, or aging a few high acid reds for the long haul, you are doing your taste buds a terrible disservice! I’ve tried a few amazing Pinot Noirs recently… not pictured, but Donum is pretty spectacular, despite the price tag… I put them up with DuMol… what’s up with “D”eez wineries? I love the terroir driven Ribbon Ridge Estate wine from Patricia Green. I knew it was too early, but it’s drinking so well now! If you have some 2016, try it again in about 1-2 years 😳… make sure you share, I bet it will be amazing!!😁 Merry Edwards was excellent too! Juicy and ripe, but with amazing acidity to balance it. Just a great winery all around!

Do you know the best time to open your aged wines? Let’s discuss… A little treat we enjoyed this weekend. Mom is in town, and she’s always looking for an Italian wine to drink with her homemade pizza, calzone, and meatballs…. This definitely did the trick, and then some! Bold dark fruit with complex gamey and herbal aromas mixed in, perfectly integrated tannins and acid, silky mouthfeel with a long finish…mmmm, this was great! Glad I held this one for a couple years. I think it still has another few amazing years left in it, but really glad we popped it now, it’s got to be at its peak or close to it! I love it when that happens! You never want to wait too long… but some wines truly benefit a great deal with a little rest and relaxation 😉! #agedtoperfection #wine #🍷 #chianticlassico @basilicacafaggio #wine

It was cool to try these together. This winery has been making great wine for close to 20 years and while some of their styles have become more mainstream, ready to drink wines, I think both the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc will do better with decanting and even a little more bottle age. The 2017 Franc was much better balanced, more expressive, silky and smooth on day 2… but I got a good sense of the great quality right out of the bottle. The 2016 CS seemed a little more ready to drink after a few hours of being open, but I’m sure it also will do well with an overnight stay in the fridge for a second day comeback! .

Is it Napa? Is it Oregon? Maybe white Burgundy? That was the thought process when we blind tasted this amazing #chardonnay from #margaretriver #australia A refreshing surprise from a region I didn’t expect! Excellent balance of fruit, lees, acid, mouthfeel and a clean lengthy finish! This is a varietally correct Chardonnay almost anyone can enjoy, even those who want (A)nything (B)ut (C)hardonnay wines! It was so delicious and fresh when first unscrewed, I left the smallest amount in the bottle to try the next day. I recommend NOT doing that. Just enjoy this gem till the last drop over a few hours of conversation, good music, and some light buttery cheeses or appetizers! Lots of other pairing options to explore with this one though! #🍷
