Admittedly, South Eastern Australia isn’t the first place I imagine growing the king of grapes, but the Little Penguin didn’t disappoint.

I may have worked in a vineyard in northern Italy and helped made a good bottle of Vernaccia over a semester, but I’m far from being a wine snob. Most red wines are all right by me, although Zinfandels and I aren’t the best of friends. I therefore liked the approach of the Little Penguin, who claims that its wines are fit for any occasion. In other words, you can enjoy a glass of it alone after a long day of work but not be ashamed to share it with friends over some cheese and crackers.

Their Cabernet Sauvignon pours ruby red into your glass and instantly smells of berries and blackcurrant. I let mine breathe for a bit before going in for a sip—full-bodied, very drinkable and not complex, but with enough sourness and an acidic bite to keep your sips very small. The tannins are mild here, unlike their bottle of Shiraz I tried last month. There isn’t much of a lingering taste, which I don’t mind, and makes it easier to drink. Being prone to the Asian Flush, I can’t afford to drink more than a glass, anyway.

The Little Penguin advises us to pair it with pasta, grilled meat, poultry, or hard cheese. I’m in the mood for Pecorino Romano, myself. Since a bottle of this cab only sets you back $7, you can afford to pick up some nice appetizers.
