Lyrics
M E R L O T
chorus:
Some people call it Merlot, some people call it Mer-LOT
I know this is a grape you will like a lot
Now, we call it Merlot, so please don’t call it Mer-LOT
I know this is a grape you will like a lot
Peaked in Popularity in America in the 90s
But fell off when Giamatti bashed it in Sideways
Then came Pinot Noir, that made me a hater
But this track’s about Merlot so we’ll get to that one later
Merlot’s the gentle, smoother sibling, shall we say
To its bolder, older brother, the TOUGHER Cabernet
It’s got looser bunches and thinner skin
Which makes it need less time than Cabernet to ripen
Deep roots in clay soils of Right Bank Bordeaux
Also descends from Cab Franc, you should know
The mother? That’s a story for another show
Her most momentous moment was the birth of Merlau
Called “BOR-do” in Venice in 1855
The same time in Bordeaux, France – First Growths were classified
Grown so well in Napa, Sonoma, and down under
World class Merlot from Washington‘ll make you wonder
What a great glass of this varietal tastes like
Splurge on a bottle if you want to do it right
With finesse and fine tannin it can be so smooth
Merlot’s a classic grape that’ll get you in the groove
So call it Merlot, please don’t call it Mer-LOT
I know this is a grape that you will like a lot
Now we can call it Merlot, you can call it Mer-LOT
I know this is a grape you will like a lot!
Merlot is found in many wine blends from across the globe. Single varietal Merlot, can also be both complex and full bodied, and while it often gets overshadowed by it’s “Bolder Older Brother”, Merlot can and does compete with Cabernet Sauvignon. Some of my favorite places to try great value, but still excellent quality Merlot are regions like Tuscany and Collio in Italy, as well as Sonoma, and Santa Ynez in California, or Red Mountain, Columbia Valley in Washington. Bordeaux is very well known for some of the best Merlot the world has to offer, especially in the Right Bank regions of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion.
